Espen Gangvik is a Norwegian artist, curator, producer and director. He graduated from the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art in 1984. Gangvik has participated in numerous group exhibitions at home and abroad. He has since 1986 undertaken a number of public commissions and is represented in several public collections.

In 2002 Gangvik founded the non-profit organization TEKS – Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre – which aims to facilitate the production and dissemination of art practices that utilise and debate new technologies. Gangvik is currently the director of TEKS as well as director of the Trondheim International Biennale for Art and Technology – Meta.Morf, founded and organized by TEKS.

Espen Gangvik is a Norwegian artist, curator, producer and director. Gangvik studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Trondheim from 1980 to 1984. 



Gangvik is noted as an artist that from a constructivist perspective works between reality and virtuality. His sculptures – often performed in metal or other materials that give a sense of possessing mass and a fixed form – is based on the manipulation of space using geometry and mathematics as the basic tool.

In the early 90´s Gangvik pioneered the utilisation of computer-assisted calculations and 3D printing for designing and producing sculptural objects. In 1996, at Norway’s first major group exhibition for electronic arts – Electra´96 – at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Oslo, he presented the sculpture series Compustructions. The series represented the first digitally produced sculptures in Norway.* Computer calculated algorithms sculpted the 3D objects from which a prototype were produced using an automatic three-axes milling machine. The final objects were casted in aluminum.

In 2002 Gangvik founded the non-profit organisation Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre (TEKS) which aims to facilitate the production and dissemination of art that utilise new technologies and scientific insights. Gangvik is currently CEO for TEKS and for Trondheim International Biennale for Art and Technology – Meta.Morf – founded by TEKS.

Espen Gangvik has from 1984 participated in numerous group exhibitions at home and abroad. He is represented in several public collections and as such purchased by the Arts Council Norway, the Norwegian National Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art. He has since 1986 carried out a number of major public commissions, including The National Monument of Freedom - Trinigon - (1995-2005) in Narvik.
